Joseph William Collins' Web Site

Welcome to my web site. I hope you find it entertaining, possibly informative, and thought-provoking. Mainly entertaining.

I'm Joseph William Collins, AKA Joe Collins. I was born on August 9, 1938 in Washington, D.C. of Marvin Henry Collins and Merilda Ambrose Barber (Babin) Collins. I was the youngest of five boys. My dad was a very quiet man with whom I don't recall ever having an actual conversation. He died two months after I graduated from high school. My mom was a very loving and religious woman.

I lived in the Anacostia section of D.C. much of my early life. I went to St. Theresa and St. Francis Xavier elementary schools. I went to two Catholic high schools which I disliked intensely and transferred to Anacostia High School.

Partway through A.H.S., I dropped out and went into the Marine Corps for a special six months active duty stint at Parris Island, South Carolina, and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Upon release I returned to D.C. and to AHS from which I graduated.

I went to D.C. Teachers College for about two months, until my father died, in 1958. I had four brothers still alive, the nearest in age seven years older. I was not close to him or to my other brothers because they were drinkers and not my friends. I wasn't close to my parents, either. In short, my family was not a close one. I knew I didn't want to stay with them and finally decided to join the Navy.

I spent four years there, in Great Lakes Naval Training Center; San Diego; San Angelo; Texas; Adak; Alaska; Yokohama, Japan; and a Naval base outside Washington D.C.

Upon discharge, I moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where I had some friends, got a job at Household Finance, fell in love, got married, began college at the University of New Mexico, graduated, moved with my wife and two children to Gustine, California, and began teaching.

With this bit of background I hope I've interested you enough in delving into the mind, heart, and soul of Joe Collins. If you're so inclined, please drop me an e-mail. If you're an old friend, I'd love to hear from you.
